Georgia GRAND-AM Connections – A Fan’s Perspective

My original idea for the prerace blog was to take a look at the some of the teams and drivers that make up the GRAND-AM Rolex Series and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series, but as I thought about it more I realized there are a lot of resources out there where you can learn more about the series and the teams involved.  Here is a link to a GRAND-AM fan guide that will give you a better understanding of the classes and  also contains a spotters guide -,  Also, Road Atlanta just did an excellent  news story that takes a closer look at the DP Teams participating in the Rolex race -

This left me with a bit of a dilemma on what exactly to focus on for this blog post.  After giving it some thought I figured I would concentrate on the drivers that live here in Georgia.  There are four drivers competing in the Rolex series that currently call Georgia home.  Here’s a quick look at each:

Andy Lally - #44 Magnus Racing, Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, GT Class – Andy Lally is an accomplished sportscar racer with wins and podiums at some of the most prestigious racing events in the World.  Lally is one of the most successful drivers in GRAND-AM.  He is a four-time Rolex 24 At Daytona winner, has won three GRAND-AM Class Championships, is a former Petit Le Mans winner, and has podiumed at both the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.  Going into this weekend’s race Lally and co-driver John Potter lead the points standings in GT. Lally lives in Dacula which is only 15 minutes from the track.

Andrew Davis - #59 Brumos Racing, Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, GT Class – Andrew Davis started racing sportscars in 2001 and scored a podium finish in his very first ALMS race which was that years Petit Le Mans.  Since that time Davis has won a GRAND-AM Class championship, and has nine wins and 25 podiums.  He and teammate Leh Keen are currently 6th in the GT Class. Andrew lives in Athens (approximately 20 minutes from the track) and is a University of Georgia graduate. GO DAWGS!!!

Anthony Lazzaro - #69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD with Ferrari, Ferrari 458, GT Class – Born in Charleston, SC, Lazarro came up though Karting and Open wheel series and was the Toyota Atlantic Champion in 1999.  Since moving to sportscars, Lazarro has raced in both the American Le Mans Series and GRAND-AM, winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and has multiple podiums at Petit Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Anthony Lazarro and his teammate Emil Assentato our currently 4th in the GT Class standings. Anthony lives in Canton, a couple hours from the track.

Dane Cameron - #42 Team Sahlen BMW/Riley, DP Class – The 2007 Star Mazda Champion has been making a name for himself by moving up quickly in sportscars.  Winning in his class at the 2011 12 Hours of Sebring, Cameron also had seven top-10 finishes in GRAND-AM that same year.  2012 saw Dane win in GRAND-AM’s GT Class at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.  In 2013, he moved up to the DP class and is currently 8th in the standings with teammate Wayne Nonnamaker. Dane lives near the track.

In addition to the drivers in the Rolex series, several drivers in the Continental tires series have connections to GA, Including: Ryan Eversley, Spencer Pumpelly, Mat Pombo, David Murry, and Seth Thomas which all call the Peach State their home.

That’s my quick look at the hometown racers to watch for on Friday and Saturday.  Later in the week I will be reposting my list of the best places to view around Road Atlanta.  Look for that on Thursday.  In the meantime have a great week.
