Audi To Serve As Official Pace Car and Safety Car for The 19th Annual Petit Le Mans presented by Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort

BRASELTON, Ga. (September 28, 2016) - The Audi R8 V10 plus will be the new Official Pace Car for the 19th Annual Petit Le Mans presented by Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort, which runs September 28th through October 1st.

The 19th Annual Petit Le Mans presented by Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort serves as the season finale for both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup and features four different classes of competition racing for the overall win, as well as class victories.

Audi holds a special place in the hallowed record books of Petit Le Mans. In 18 years of running this 10-hour endurance race at Road Atlanta, Audi has captured the overall victory nine consecutive times. In 2014, the Audi R8 LMS finished 1st in the GTD category, proving endurance racing success is part of the Audi DNA.

"Audi is proud to be the Official Pace and Safety car of the Petit Le Mans. The Audi R8 V10 plus and the 5.2L engine will surely have enough power to pace the race leaders," said Tristan Herbert, Manager, Motorsport and Customer Racing at Audi of America. "Audi fans and customers have witnessed much success at this historic endurance classic and it is our goal to continue this tradition. We are preparing our Audi Sport customers racing teams, Magnus Racing and Stevenson Motorsports, as they vie for the NAEC team, driver and manufacturers' championships."

The 5.2L Audi R8 V10 plus will lead the field of entries as the pace car and will also manage the caution periods during the 10-hour endurance race as the Official Safety Car.

"Audi has a rich history at Road Atlanta and particularly at Petit Le Mans, as the winningest manufacturer at the event," said Geoff Lee, president and general manager of Road Atlanta. "The company and team that has raced here over the years has shaped the history of the event in more ways than one. Audi was the event sponsor for many years and helped build Petit Le Mans into the internationally-renowned race it is now. Their long-standing reign as Petit Le Mans champions stretches from 2000 to 2008 and we're thrilled to once again see an Audi out front as the Official Pace Car for this year's Petit Le Mans presented by Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort."

ABOUT AUDI:
Embodied in the R8 DNA is know-how acquired on the racetrack and from the legacy of Audi endurance racing. For the first time, Audi co-developed the all-new R8 with the all-new GT3 race car, the Audi R8 LMS. Both the new Audi R8 and the R8 LMS made significant performance gains, thanks to the close cooperation between race car engineers, motorsports specialists and developers. The result is a race car that is 50 percent race car and 100 percent Audi. Common parts shared between the two models including the V10 engine and a new ASF(R) aluminum construction with innovative light-weight multi-material construction. Design cues throughout the R8 also harken back to its racing roots, such as the prominent wheel arches and vertical lighting design, which are suggestive of the R18 LMP1 racecar.
