BMW To Serve As Official Pace Car for 21st Annual Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta

BRASELTON, Ga. (October 5, 2018) – BMW of North America, with Southern regional headquarters located due north of downtown Atlanta, has established a partnership with Road Atlanta to serve as the Official Pace Car and Safety Car of the 21st Annual Motul Petit Le Mans, Oct. 10-13.

BMW of North America is supplying a BMW M850i xDrive as the Pace Car and a BMW M5 as the Safety Car for the event, which will pace the field of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competitors in the season finale showdown for 10 hours on Saturday, Oct. 13. In addition, fans can explore BMW’s product line at their display in the Fan Zone throughout the four-day festival.

BMW has successfully been competing at a factory- and privateer-level in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship since 2014, and for many years before that in both the American Le Mans Series and the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series before their merger.

“BMW of North America is pleased to partner with Road Atlanta and increase our support of this year’s Motul Petit Le Mans,” said Victor Leleu, BMW of North America Motorsport Manager. “Road Atlanta is a fantastic venue that has been the theater of some of BMW’s greatest racing success, such as the IMSA GT title of 2011 and last year’s Motul Petit Le Mans GTLM Class win. This year, Road Atlanta will see a significant increase in BMW presence around the circuit as we debut ///M Town, a virtual destination for high performance lovers. ///M Town is the place where TOO MUCH is just right and anything goes as long as it gets high performance car fans and enthusiasts excited. Fans at Road Atlanta will be able to see many of ///M Town’s features, including our new ///M Experience display, the latest BMW M and M Motorsport automobiles as well as the Official BMW M850i xDrive Pace Car and 600hp BMW M5 Safety Car. ///M Town is “For The Fans” so we could not imagine a better place or time for the debut than Dr. Panoz’s signature event.”

“The upcoming Motul Petit Le Mans also gives us a wonderful opportunity to honor Dr. Panoz and his contribution to our sport,” continued Leleu. “Motorsport is the catalyst that creates automotive innovation and Dr. Panoz knew that perhaps better than anyone. The Panoz Motor Sport Group’s racing cars were nothing if not innovative and the new BMW M850i xDrive Pace Car and The BMW M5 that will serve as the official pace car for the 21st running of Dr. Panoz’s Motul Petit Le Mans is one of BMW’s most innovative road cars so we could not be more honored to lead the field to the green flag.”

“BMW has been a top contender in the IMSA paddock for decades and has led countless laps at Motul Petit Le Mans and Road Atlanta over the years,” said Geoff Lee, president and general manager at Road Atlanta. “This year, we are very pleased that BMW will also be leading laps as the Official Pace Car and Safety Car of Motul Petit Le Mans. We’re looking forward to BMW’s involvement, to showing this machinery off throughout the race and to seeing a BMW pace the field for the thrilling 10-hour championship decider.”

The 21st Annual Motul Petit Le Mans four-day festival of speed kicks off on Wednesday, October 10 and culminates with the 10-hour IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season finale on Saturday, October 13.
